Notes
A–01 J. F. Weeks & G. Knight Jr. 1839 (Joshua F. Weeks & George Knight Jr.) RoI, Dir., OM 0 12 At the entrance to the tomb, a sandstone owner’s marker is found with the names Weeks and Knight plus the 1839 date. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s through the 1850s leads to Joshua F. Weeks (1794–1875) and George Knight Jr. (1815–1892). Both men were buried at Evergreen Cemetery, so neither appears in the revised RoI for Eastern Cemetery. In the 1978 RoI, Jordan assigned tomb A–01 to James S. Gould, but this may be an error given the presence of the Weeks/Knight marker. Further, no other Goolds are entombed in A–01, yet nine are entombed in A–02. In the revised Record of Interments, Gould has been temporarily re- assigned to A–02. Jordan’s RoI note for this tomb (A–01) reads, “Many bodies in this tomb, names unknown.”
A–02 James S. Gould (Goold) RoI, Dir., OM 7 14 Jordan assigned this tomb to the Gould family. He used the spelling James S. Gould in the RoI, while James S. Goold appears in the Portland directories from the 1840s and 1850s. Gould/ Goold was born in 1815, died 1892 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery. He is not listed in the revised Record of Interments since he apparently was never entombed at Eastern Cemetery.
A–03 Ezekiel Dyer RoI 1 5 Ezekiel (died 1849) is entombed.
A–04 A. Lewis (Capt. Ansel Lewis) RoI 1 6 RoI lists the owner only as “Lewis, A.” but Captain Lewis is named in the book as died in 1844 and entombed.
A–05 J. Simonton (with family) (1841) RoI 1 16 RoI lists owner in 1841 as J. Simonton (1790–1877). This is James, and he is listed as entombed.
A–06 E. Shields & W. Adie (1841) (Capt. William Adie & Edward Shields RoI, OM 2 12 The RoI owner assignment matches a marble owner’s marker found at the entrance to the tomb. Both owners are entombed in A–06.
A–07 M. Merrill–J. L.–A. (1844) RoI, Dir. 0 9 A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to 1850s leads from the “M. Merrill” assigned as co-owner of this tomb to Moses Merrill (1798–1884), who was buried at Evergreen Cemetery and does not appear in the revised RoI. The “J.L. Merrill” is likely James L. Merrill (1807–1865), also buried at Evergreen Cemetery and therefore not appearing in the revised RoI. The “A. Merrill” leads to a few possibilities, one of which could be Alford, who died in 1843 (the year before the assignment of 1844 in Jordan’s RoI). He appears as Alfred in the 1834 Portland directory.
A–08 A. Winslow & B. Underwood 1843 (Albert? Winslow & Benjamin Underwood) OM, Dir. 8 13 The marble owner’s marker at the entrance to the tomb reads “A. Winslow & B. Underwood.” A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s leads to Albert Winslow (c. 1785–1863), who is listed in the RoI but not the book. Two others with first initial A are found in the directories as well but are not included in the book or RoI. Some of Albert’s direct family members are also entombed. It’s far more certain that Benjamin Underwood is the co-owner, as he appears in all of the directories for this period. He died at age 91 in 1889 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, so he does not appear in the revised RoI.
A–09 T. M. Haskell–J.–J.B. 1843 (Thomas M. & Joseph B.) RoI, Dir., OM 1 18 The marble owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb gives T. M. Haskell and the 1843 date. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s leads to Thomas M. Haskell, who died in 1877 at age 61. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, so his name does not appear in the revised RoI. Too many options exist for “J. Haskell,” but “J. B. Haskell” is Joseph B. Haskell, who died in 1881 and is entombed.
A–10 — — Cammett 1843 OM 14 16 The heavily eroded marble owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb names — — Cammett and the date 1843. The majority of those entombed are named Cammett.
A–11 Carter–Griffeth–Shirley RoI, OM, Dir. 1 20 The RoI matches the marble owner’s marker found at the entrance to the tomb. There are many possibilities named Carter found in the Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s; only Artemus Carter (died 1855) is found in Jordan’s book. Two or three options exist for the Griffeth and Shirley names as well.
A–12 — Wright OM 8 10 The marble owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb names Wright (first initial illegible). The majority of those entombed are named Wright.
A–13 J. Thaxter–J. Todd -C. W. Child RoI, Dir. 1 10 Candidates for co-owners of the tomb include father and/or son Joseph Thaxter, plus James, James T. and/or John Todd, all of whom are entombed and appear in the revised RoI. Only Charles W. Child is certain. He appears in the directories from the 1840s and 1850s. He died in 1862 at age 52 as is entombed.
A–14 Williams family 20 29 Multiple family names are listed, but 20 people are named Williams.
A–15 Marwick RoI, Dir. 0 7 Only one Marwick is found in the book, Hannah, who died at age 79 in 1864. She is listed as wife of Captain Atwood Marwick, who is found in the 1834 Portland directory. Vital records confirm they married in 1805, but Atwood’s birth and death years are not found, nor is his place of burial. It’s unclear if he was tomb owner.
A–16 Judah Chandler RoI, Dir. 2 14 A search of Portland directories leads to father and son Judah Chandler. Judah Sr. was likely the tomb owner, born about 1796 and died between 1850 and 1856. He appears in the revised RoI. Judah Jr., (born c. 1824) was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, year unknown. Judah Jr.’s wife died in 1853 and was buried at Eastern Cemetery in tomb A–16.
A–17 Eight families 2 21 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–18 Four families 8 8 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–19 Three families 4 5 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–20 Tewksbury–Mason RoI, Dir. 0 5 No records are found for either family in this tomb, so it was likely emptied and sold to another family. Four family names are found among those entombed. (There are also Tewksburys in tomb A–43.)
A–21 Six families 15 25 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–22 Three families 6 9 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–23 Nine families 8 19 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–24 2nd Parish Tomb RoI 1 4 Reverend Edward Paine died 1827 and is listed in the RoI.
A–25 Mackie OM, Dir. 11 18 A slate marker at the entrance of the tomb is for Andrew Mackie (1827), although it appears to be a free-standing gravestone versus a more typical owner’s marker. Still, the predominant name among the entombed is Mackie.
A–26 Capt. N. Blake 1832 (Captain Nathaniel Blake) OM, Dir. 15 22 The heavily-eroded sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance to this tomb reads “Capt. N. Blake” with the date 1832. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s confirms this to be Captain Nathaniel Blake (1811–1887), who was entombed in A–26. Also note that this tomb holds the last burial recorded at EC, that of Harry Blake in 1962.
A–27 Butsey tomb (Stevens & Mitchell families) Book 14 24 The record for Margaret Stevens reads “Buried Butsey tomb, A–27.” No Butseys are found in the book or RoI, and a search of Portland’s directories from the 1830s to the 1850s provides no evidence of any Butseys in Portland. The tomb records now show burials for 15 Stevens and 7 Mitchells.
A–28 Simeon Gould & Ira P. Woodbury RoI, Dir. 0 1 No burial records for these two are found in the RoI or book. Simeon Gould is found in the 1831 and 1834 Portland directories, but not after. He may have moved from Portland and died after 1834. Ira P. Woodbury appears in the 1850 Portland directory, and his Portland vital record shows he died April 9, 1851. He was first buried at Western Cemetery, with a later move to Evergreen, so he does not appear in the revised RoI.
A–29 Six families 27 30 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–30 John D. Hamblet RoI, Dir., OM 2 24 The marble owner’s marker at the entrance to the tomb matches the RoI record. John D. Hamblet died in 1850 and is entombed, so he appears on the revised RoI. His name is misspelled as Hamlet in the 1834 directory.
A–31 Three families 1 7 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–32 Thomas Todd RoI, Dir. 1 8 General Thomas Todd died in 1854 and is entombed. He appears in the 1844 Portland directory.
A–33 Six families 11 19 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–34 S. Waite, Jr. (1836) (Stephen Waite, Jr.) RoI 9 11 Stephen Waite Jr died in 1862 and is entombed.
A–35 Nine families 3 13 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–36 Ten families 22 35 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–37 Owen RoI, Dir. 0 1 There are many Owens found in the Portland directories from the 1830s to 1850s. But a likely owner of tomb A–37 is Ebenezer Owen, who died in 1861 at about age 81. Because his vital record confirms his burial at Eastern Cemetery, he is found in the revised RoI. Note in the RoI: “Bodies moved to Evergreen Cemetery N. 1890” The monument for Ebenezer Owen at Evergreen lists six children who died between 1816 and 1846 and who likely were first entombed in A–37 at Eastern Cemetery, but no vital records are found for any of them to confirm this, so they do not appear in the revised RoI.
A–38 Woodbury family 9 20 Multiple family names are listed, but 13 people are named Woodbury.
A–39 Eight families 11 21 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–40 Jo— Stevens 1841 OM, Dir. 13 16 The heavily-eroded marble owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb gives the name Jo— Stevens. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s leads to three possibilities, Joseph, Jonathan, and Joshua, but only Jonathan appears on the list of those entombed. He died in 1857 at age 83.
A–41 J & J Knight (1829) RoI, Dir. 1 7 A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to 1850s leads to a few men with the initial “J.” Jacob is the only adult male from the list who was entombed in A–41 (he died at age 66 in 1841) so he is the likely owner.
A–42 Seven families 8 20 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–43 John Tewksbury RoI 1 5 John Tewksbury died in 1866. He served in the Civil War, so he may not actually be entombed.
A–44 Eight families 10 19 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–45 Eleven families 14 19 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–46 B. Adams & C. Rogers 1827 (Bartlett Adams & Charles Rogers, Jr.) OM 15 20 The sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb is for B. Adams and C. Rogers, Jr. Bartlett Adams died in 1828 and is entombed. His son-in-law Charles Rogers, Jr. died in 1879 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
A–47 H. Bailey (Henry Bailey) RoI, Dir. 0 8 A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to 1850s leads to Henry Bailey, who is found in all editions as the sole possibility. Born around 1800 and died in 1867, he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery and so he does not appear in the revised RoI.
A–48 L. Cutter & — Mitchell 1827 (Levi Cutter) OM, Dir. 16 18 The sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance to this tomb names L. Cutter (Levi Cutter, who died in 1856 at age 82) as co-owner. Levi appears in all editions of Portland directories searched from the 1830s to the 1850s. The other co-owner is Mitchell, although the first initial on the marker is not clear, making it impossible to narrow down who this is. Many Mitchells are found in Portland directories, and members of the Mitchell family are entombed in A–48.
A–49 J. Dicks–J.D. Gardner (1826)Capt. Thomas Browne Book, RoI, Dir. 0 4 A search of Portland directories leads to John Weir Dicks in the 1844, 1850 and 1856 editions. He was born 1809, died 1881, and was buried in Massachusetts, so he does not appear in the revised RoI. His 2-year-old son was buried at Eastern Cemetery in 1849. John D. Gardner is found in the 1834 and 1844 directories, but no more is known of him so he does not appear in the revised RoI. Capt. Thomas Browne’s burial note reads “Buried in his tomb,” (suggesting he was tomb owner). His wife Ann died ten years after he did, and was buried in tomb A–49. The captain may have been second owner, since Dicks and Gardner do not appear to have been entombed.
A–50 Varnum family 17 23 Multiple family names are listed, but 18 people are named Varnum.
A–51 J. Paine (1825) (Josiah Paine) RoI 1 5 Josiah Paine died in 1825 and is entombed.
A–52 J. Kimball 1825 RoI, Dir., OM 0 7 The sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb matches the RoI, but a search of the Portland directories provides too many possibilities to be able to narrow down the tomb owner’s full name.
A–53 E. Howe & D. Todd 1825 RoI, Dir., OM 0 7 The sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb matches the RoI. A search of the Portland directories from the 1830s through the 1850s leads to Edward Howe. He was born c. 1784 and died at age 93 in 1877. His vital record lists him at the City Tomb (since he died in January, his body would be stored there until spring thaw), but no records show where his final resting place is. He does not appear in the revised RoI. A search of Portland directories does not narrow the search for D. Todd, so this co-owner remains a mystery.
A–54 John Bartels–John Coe RoI 1 16 John Bartels died in 1860, John Coe died in 1847. Both are entombed.
A–55 J. Harrod & John Cox 1825 RoI, Dir., OM 0 12 The sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb matches the RoI. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s does not provide an answer as to who J. Harrod was. John Cox (1795–1871) does appear in the 1834, 1844 and later directories. When he died at age 75, he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, and so he does not appear in the revised RoI.
A–56 Four families 8 10 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–57 Twelve families 13 30 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–58 Six families 6 19 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–59 Lewis family 3 13 All but one of the 13 entombed are named Lewis.
A–60 Wm Webb 1824 Capt. Lemuel Moody family OM, Dir. 17 20 The sandstone owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb names (Captain) William Webb, who died in 1830 at age 53. He therefore does not appear in any of the directories from the 1830s onward. Although many Webbs are entombed, this is also where Captain Lemuel Moody and at least 11 of his clan are buried.
A–61 Boyd & Southgate (1823) RoI, Dir. 1 15 Joseph Cotton Boyd died in 1823 and is entombed. The co-owner is likely Horatio Southgate, who appears in Portland directories from the 1830s through the 1850s. He was born in 1781, died in 1864 at age 83 and was buried at Dunstan Cemetery in Scarborough ME, so he does not appear on the revised RoI.
A–62 Seven families 12 23 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed. Note this tomb holds the only known person of color to have been entombed.
A–63 J. & C. J. Barbour -S. Staples (1846) RoI, Dir. 1 8 Although no listings in the tombs are found for the Barbour family, a search of Portland’s directories leads to John and Charles J. Barbour, who owned a shoe store together for many years. Charles died in 1882 at age 72, and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery. Less certain is John Barbour, who likely died in 1888 at age 83 and also was buried at Evergreen. Neither appear on the revised RoI. Samuel Staples is likely co- owner, as he died in 1846, the same date as the owner attribution in Jordan’s RoI. Since he was initially buried in the tomb, he appears in the revised RoI. He was later moved to Evergreen Cemetery.
A–64 John H. Hall RoI, Dir. 1 3 John H. Hall was likely not the first owner of this tomb. He was born in 1835 and wouldn’t have had ownership until at least 1855, a full generation after the tombs were completed.
A–65 Preble OM 5 5 The marble owner’s marker at the tomb entrance gives the Preble name.
A–66 Eight families 7 21 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–67 J. Mahan (John Mahan) RoI, Dir. 1 1 John Mahan, Jr. died in 1846 at age 28 and was entombed at Eastern Cemetery. His vital record of death notes that his father was the “(late) John Mahan.” John Sr. may have been original owner, though no death record is found for him. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s shows John Jr. living in Portland in 1844. Another John Mahan appears in the 1856 directory (perhaps a third generation).
A–68 Anderson (John Anderson) (Samuel Anderson) Book 1 10 The burial record for John Anderson (1853) notes “Buried Anderson tomb” and gives tomb A–68. He appears on the revised RoI, although he was moved to Windham later. The note for Frank Maynard Clark reads “Buried Samuel Anderson tomb” and “grave stone lost.” Tomb A–68 was owned by John Anderson (1792-1853) and then likely his son Samuel (b 1824), who died in 1905 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery. Samuel does not appear on the revised RoI.
A–69 Fourteen families 28 36 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–70 Cram family 8 14 All but two of the 14 entombed are named Cram.
A–71 How family 10 13 All but two of the 13 entombed are named How.
A–72 Ilsley family 25 33 Multiple family names are listed, but 26 people are named Ilsley.
A–73 Cross family 19 27 Multiple family names are listed, but 16 people are named Cross.
A–74 Five families 7 12 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–75 Four families 7 13 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–76 Willis OM 9 10 The marble owner’s marker at the entrance of the tomb gives the Willis name, and 9 of the 10 entombed are named Willis.
A–77 Five families 6 10 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–78 Cobb family 11 12 All but two of the 12 entombed are named Cobb.
A–79 Robison family 13 21 Multiple family names are listed, but 12 people are named Robison.
A–80 John Mussey Jordan Tomb RoI, Dir., OM 1 6 John Mussey died in 1817 and was entombed, but moved to Evergreen in 1871. His marker at Evergreen reads “Eastern Cemetery 1817.Removed to the spot 1871.” Today, a modern granite owner’s marker is found at the entrance to tomb A–80 and reads “Jordan Tomb” yet no burial records for entombed Jordans are found. Note: Bill Jordan, the author of the original RoI and book referenced here, wished to be buried in the tomb, but his family buried him elsewhere when he died in 2015.
A–81 Nine families 14 23 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–82 Seven families 3 22 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
A–83 Asa Clapp family 11 12 Although the RoI does not name him, Asa Clapp was owner of this tomb, as evidenced by an 1810 receipt in the MHS collections. Clapp paid stone-cutter Bartlett Adams for a monument Adams created for and installed on the tomb.
A–84 1st Parish Church tomb RoI 6 7 Reverend Samuel Deane died in 1814 and is entombed.
A–85 Webster family 17 20 All but two of the 20 entombed are named Webster.
A–86 McLellan family 9 20 Multiple family names are listed, but 14 people are named McLellan.
D–73 Nathaniel Deering (1795) RoI 1 2 Nathaniel Deering died in 1795 and was entombed in D–73, but later moved to Evergreen. There are likely many more members of this family who were moved, but records aren’t found to support this.
E–06 Ingraham family 3 18 All but one of the 18 entombed in E–06 are named Ingraham.
F–093 Caleb Adams & Samuel Butts RoI, Dir. 2 7 Caleb Adams died in 1859 and is entombed. Samuel Butts appears in the 1831 and 1834 Portland directories but not the 1844 or subsequent ones. No vital record of his death is found. While further investigation is done, Mr. Butts’ name remains on the revised RoI.
F–095 Eight families 10 20 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
F–096 Seven families 5 21 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
F–105 Eleven families 17 25 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
G–113 Three families 7 7 No owner is assigned; multiple family names are listed
H–71 Nathaniel Coffin & Ebenezer Mayo (1823) RoI, Dir. 2 6 Probably Nathaniel Coffin, Jr, who died in 1826 and is entombed. It makes sense that his name does not appear in the directories after that date. Four of the six entombed are named Coffin. Records for Ebenezer Mayo are less clear. There were likely two, if not three, generations of the same name. Portland marriages to Polly (1792), Jane (1795), and Catherine (1811) are found, as is a family tree giving his years as 1764 to 1840. While further investigation is done, his name remains on the revised RoI.
J–30 David Greely 1 1 It’s unclear if David Greely was the tomb’s owner, or simply the one person recorded to be entombed there. While further investigation is done, his name remains on the revised RoI.
unknown J. Sturdivant tomb Book, Dir. - 1 Abba Drake’s burial note reads “Buried in J. Sturdivant tomb,” but it’s unclear who J. Sturdivant is. Possibly Joseph, who appears in the 1844 and 1856 directories. Three other tombs use the Sturdivant or Sturtevant name; they all might be the same tomb.
unknown Newhall tomb Book - 1 Albert Newhall’s burial note reads “Buried Newhall tomb.” He is the only person named Newhall known at Eastern Cemetery; we don’t know which tomb was his.
unknown Isaac Sturdivant tomb Book, Dir. - 1 Although he is named in the burial record for Hannah Collins, it’s unclear if Isaac himself was entombed. This name does appear in Portland directories in 1834, 1850, and 1856. Note three other tombs are referred to using the Sturdivant or Sturtevant names; they might all be the same tomb.
unknown Sturdevant–Drake tomb Book - 1 Benjamin Drake’s burial note reads “Buried Sturdevant–Drake tomb,” but it’s unclear who they are. Three other tombs use the Sturdivant or Sturtevant name; they might all be the same tomb. No other tomb is assigned to the Drake family.
unknown Wyer tomb Book, Dir. - 2 Burial notes for Eleazer and John T. Wyer read “Buried in Wyer tomb” and “Buried in his father’s tomb,” but no other burial records are found for Wyer. Eleazer Wyer is found in the Portland directories of 1834 and 1844.
unknown Cyrus Sturtevant tomb Book, Dir. - 1 Cyrus Sturtevant’s burial record reads “Buried Cyrus Sturtevant tomb,” but it’s unclear which tomb was his. A search of Portland directories shows that Cyrus was a resident in the 1840s and 1850s. Three other tombs use the Sturdivant or Sturtevant name; they all might be the same tomb.
unknown Merritt tomb Book, Dir. - 1 Edward Collins’ burial note reads “Buried Merritt tomb,” but no others named Merritt are found at Eastern Cemetery. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s does not help.
unknown Arthur Mack tomb Book, Dir. - 1 Frances Ilsley’s burial note reads “Buried in Arthur Mack tomb,” but there is no burial record for Arthur Mack. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s does not help.
unknown Jonathan Stewart tomb Book, Dir. - 1 Frank Frost’s burial note reads “Buried Jonathan Stewart’s tomb,” but there is no record of burial for Stewart. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s does not help.
unknown Samuel Chadwick tomb Book, Dir. - 2 George Chadwick’s burial note reads “Buried in Chadwick tomb” and Samuel Chadwick’s reads “Buried in his tomb,” so while Samuel was likely owner, it’s unclear which tomb was his. A search of Portland directories from the 1830s to the 1850s shows that Samuel was a long-term resident of Portland.
unknown Gould tomb(s) Book - 3 Ida May Stearns, Charles H. Johnson, and Matilda H. Hooper are all listed in the Gould tomb. This is possibly A–02, but Goulds are found in three tombs.
unknown James Crie tomb Book, Dir. - 6 Margaret A. Knapp’s burial note reads “Buried James Crie tomb.” James (1809–1883) was married twice and had at least 6 children. His first wife and three of their infant children were entombed, as was his adult son James Henry Crie, but all five were removed to Evergreen Cemetery in 1868. He was buried at Evergreen in 1883. One other Knapp is found at Eastern Cemetery — Benjamin, who died in 1881 at age 73 and entombed in A–41, but no familial relationship is found between Margaret and Benjamin that would lead to the conclusion that the Crie tomb was A–41.
unknown J. Poole tomb Book - 1 Sarah Smith’s burial note reads “Buried J. Poole tomb,” but there is no record of entombment for a J. Poole. We find James Poole (d. 1868) and James M. Poole (1853) memorialized on a monument in section A, row 4, plot 10. A search of Portland directories does not help find who Sarah Smith’s “J. Poole” might be.
unknown Smith tomb Smith–Brown tomb Book - 2 Susan Crowe was buried “in Smith’s tomb.” Charles Foss’ burial note reads “Buried Smith–Brown tomb.” Smiths are found in six tombs, Browns in two, but none overlap.
